Time to Get Going

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

“Get up….”

1 Kings 19:7

On emotionally chaotic days, I often regroup by praying through John Eldredge’s Daily Prayer*. A particular phrase in his prayer intrigues me, “Reveal to me where You are working in my life and grant to me the grace of Your healing.”

I have discovered that praying this specific request is like praying for patience and situations requiring patience quickly show up! For example, one day  in the aftermath of post separation bullying from my former narcissist spouse, I cratered. Establishing and maintaining my boundaries with a narcissist simply felt too exhausting and emotionally draining.

Later that day as I drove under a large Juniper tree on a country road, the radio pastor shouted his paraphrased version of God’s words to Elijah**. “Stand up from under that Juniper tree, stop licking your wounds, and get going. I have more for you to do!” I laughed aloud at how the timing of those words intersected with my own heart’s weary condition.

God used that pastor’s words to reveal to me where He was working in my life. I instantly knew it was time to stop complaining, to get up, and to stand firm within my boundaries!

Father, I thank You for the diverse ways You communicate with me. Thank You for revealing to me where You are working in my life and exhorting me with a bit of humor. Keep me moving forward even when I want to sit and complain. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.

** Elijah was exhausted from his encounter with pagan priests. See 1 Kings 19:3-18.
