A Contaminated Heart

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

I paused before answering the question, “If you knew you would enter glory soon, what would you wish you had fixed before arriving in heaven?” I interpreted that question as, “What is at the top of my list of heart issues?”

I settled on King David’s confessional request in Psalm 51 as the top priority, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” I wanted the Lord to do for my heart what I had just done for my garden spade—wash it clean from the grime of gardening.

I realized that without seeking intentional cleansing, unresolved emotions of painful memories from a narcissistic relationship would accumulate and dirty my heart. God patiently offers me the same option He offered King David, to bring those moments to Him so He can renew a right spirit within me.

Hopefully, these times of cleansing will grow farther and further apart. For now, I am content with my answer to the question, “What would you wish you had fixed before arriving in heaven?” With a humble heart, I will continue to bring my requests to the feet of Jesus as an offering and await His transforming, cleansing touch.

Father, it is so easy for me to stew in the angst of painful memories. I offer those raw emotions to You for cleansing as I release those experiences into Your hands. Thank You for loving me enough to address anything that needs Your healing touch. May You be gloried through all the ways You work in my life. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
