The Protection of Discretion

Discretion will watch over you.
Proverbs 2:11
King Solomon described a character quality I realize I lacked in my relationship with my narcissist spouse, discretion. I lacked the common sense to recognize that something more than communication challenges afflicted the relationship. Because I lacked discretion, I continued to seek new communication strategies—even though each previous strategy had failed.
Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs 2:3-11 identifies the source of wisdom, knowledge, and discretion:
…if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look
for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will
understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and
understanding….
Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your
soul.
Discretion will protect you and understanding will guard you.
With God’s help, I gradually began to learn to step back, observe, and consider how I
wanted to engage, including the option of not engaging. Discretion protected me from
communication chaos and redirected me toward self-care, wholeness, and, with time, a
healing heart.
Father, thank you for being the source of wisdom and understanding. Thank You for
teaching me to apply discretion in my communications. Thank You for showing me how
to care for my soul and my life. May Your wisdom and discretion continue to protect and
guard me. In the name of the source of all wisdom, Jesus, I pray, amen.
