Renewed Confidence

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

Proverbs 16:9

After decades of submitting to a narcissist’s control and assumed authority over my life, I lost confidence in expressing my preferences and my needs. I no longer trusted my heart nor my observations about the relationship. Those insecurities leached into my relationship with the Lord. I noticed I also lacked confidence in my ability to discern God’s leading for making personal decisions. I also questioned every decision I made.

Proverbs 16 challenged my heart to rest upon a foundational Biblical principle—God’s

sovereignty. If I am authentically seeking God’s guidance for my life, I can trust that He

will sovereignly direct my choices, even when I lack confidence in my decision-making

abilities.

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps (v. 9).

As I recalibrate my life, reading God’s Word and prayerfully listening for His still small

voice* undergirds my growing self-confidence. Adding “narcissist informed” counsel,

contributes an additional dose of reassurance. Best of all, I rest in the truth that though I

plan my course, the Lord promises to be present and guide each step of faith I take.

Thank You, Father, for Your reassuring presence and for growing my confidence in

hearing Your still small voice. Keep my heart and mind confident you are determining

my steps as I plan my course. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.

*Kings 19:11-13
