A Tough Question

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them

may be one, Father, just as you are in Me and I am in You.

John 17:20, 21

I return to my devotional’s dog-eared pages to reconsider a penetrating question: “Are you helping God to answer Jesus’ prayer or have you some other end for your life*?”

Oswald Chambers bases this question upon Jesus’ prayer in John 17, “I pray also for

those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father,

just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in Us so that the world may

believe that You have sent Me” (v. 20, 21).

I realize that I do have a specific focus for my life. I envision a joyful and productive life

serving God and my family—not this painful work of healing from the devastating

trauma of narcissistic wounds. However, I did not see how “becoming one with the

Father” coincides with my current circumstances.

After a time of deliberate reflection, I now see how God is redeeming my situation for

His own purposes. He tenderly fine-tunes my heart through my crisis. Each day requires

seeking God’s presence and guidance, mornings, afternoons, evenings, and often

during the night. As a result, He draws me ever closer toward answering His Son’s

prayer for me--oneness with Him.

Father, instead of regretting my circumstances, I want to know Your heart within them,

how You want to access, heal, and redeem them for Your glory. Use each new

challenge to draw me ever closer to oneness with You. In the name of the One Who

prays for me, amen.

*Chambers, “My Utmost for His Highest”

**(Romans 8:28)
