An Unexpected Treasure

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.

Impress them on your children.

As I continue healing and growing from narcissistic wounds, I intentionally look for opportunities to share these new life skills with my children and grandchildren.  While sorting a memorabilia box, a folded piece of manilla paper titled “Prays and Verses” caught my attention. It was my childhood booklet of prayers and Bible verses randomly cut and taped onto the pages.

A visit from my granddaughter gave new life to that yellowed little booklet. She marched in the door angry about not being allowed to join in her older sister’s activities.

“Well,” I said, “Disappointment is a part of life, but anger is not the best way to express disappointment.”

Caroline considered my comment then announced, “I need some Bible verses to help me with that!”

Surprisingly, my little “Prays and Verses” booklet inspired her to create her own version.

Her project reminded me of Deuteronomy 6: 6-7. “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children, talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Father, thank You for intertwining the daily activities of life with occasions to influence those I love. Remind me often that You can also use truths gleaned during my healing journey to invest in the spiritual growth of future generations. Keep me sensitive to spontaneous teaching moments in the days ahead. I pray in the name of Your Son, Jesus, amen.
