The Path Forward

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

The path snaked around tree trunks and through thick undergrowth before disappearing into the shadows. I longed to explore it just as I explored cow paths as a young girl. The private land remained off limits, however, until a family member purchased it and my long-awaited exploration began.

I painted this mystery path for an artist friend who shared in my journey of healing from narcissistic abuse. Her comment, “Every painting needs a title and the artist’s statement,” inspired me to draft both:

Beyond the Fence

“I often stood at the fence separating me from the path that threatened yet beckoned as it disappeared into the shadowy unknown. The path reminded me of my fears of the future as I walked away from all things familiar.

Wire cutters, fencing pliers, and determination helped construct the gate that allowed long-awaited access. With nippers in one hand and a walking stick in the other, I headed forward into the unknown. Around the bend, a massive boulder offered a resting place. An open area invited the sun to dispel the shadows and to warm my face.

For years, the wire fence had barred me from the path forward and restrained me within the confined spaces of my life. Crossing it required faith and courage. Rather than my life becoming narrower as it moved into the dimly lit future, it brightened and enlarged.

Instead of the shadowy deep, I found enough light for each step. The darkness I feared shrouded where I stood before moving forward. The darkness, indeed, was what-I-left-behind.”

Father, thank You for the unique way You communicate truth through Your Creation. Forgive me for my faltering faith when facing the unknown future. Renew my adventurous spirit for the days ahead. Be glorified in each step of my journey as You faithfully direct the path before me. In the name of Jesus who also walked the paths of earth, I pray, amen.
