The Gift of Words

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

…You are enthroned as the Holy One.

For months, I preferred isolation due to the lack of words to explain why I had separated from my narcissistic spouse. I only responded to inquirers with, “Something is wrong, but I don’t know how to describe it.”

Gradually, the Lord added words to my vocabulary, words that captured elusive concepts. I collected my growing vocabulary in Now I Get It as an attempt to capture what hurt. I also began to understand the wonderful gift God provided in language for communicating with others.

Psalm 22 reveals King David’s ability to capture his heart through poetry and song. This psalm is one of the Psalms often quoted by New Testament writers. Jesus also quoted from it from the cross.

Inspired by David’s psalm, I pause to express my own experience with God’s grace during this challenging season of my life:

Thank You, Father, for words

to communicate my heart to You.

Thank You for hearing and responding

when no words have

formed on my lips.

While enthroned in the heavens,

You counted my tears

as Your daughter anguished over

another’s actions,

deeds that drove Jesus to His atoning death.

Your Son also wept, not just for this child,

but for all sons and daughters releasing their hearts

into Your care for healing wounds

inflicted by those

who still resist His grace.

Amen.
