The Fruit of Light

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

… the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth”

Occasionally, my mind drifts to my life before I identified the chaos in my world, narcissism. I recall scurrying about with dizzying tasks—cooking, cleaning, laundry, carpooling, and family meals around the table. These images of family tempt me to second-guess my decision to explode that life by confronting the undercurrent of narcissistic symptoms of emotional isolation, explosive outbursts, and devaluing statements.

I pull my heart back from longing when I realize that what I lost was only an illusion—a mirage of a functioning family rather than something that truly existed. The dizzying images were only reflections of an emotionally numb woman robotically moving throughout the rooms of her home and the days of her life.

Another young family now flourishes within the walls of the house where we once lived. I smile to see the way she lovingly cares for the landscape I planted during my years there. And I, too, flourish within my soul. Creativity, spontaneity, and laughter now grace my days. My world radiates with truth and authenticity—experiences Paul says result from “living as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

Live as children of light…for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth” (Ephesians 5:8-9) (emphasis mine).

Father, thank You for the ability to see what was once invisible and for my need for Your grace to intervene in my life. Thank You for walking with me through that emotional pain of seeing what could not be unseen. Hold me closely by Your side as I seek to daily walk within the light of Your presence. In the name of Your son, the Light of the world, I pray, amen.
