Possibilities

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

with God, all things are possible

When Army worms attack the meadows near my home, they gnaw the grass blades to the roots, leaving extensive patches of brown among the green pastures. However, the Army worm’s damage does not compare to what the prophet Joel prophesized for God’s judgement upon the nation of Israel—a massive invasion of locusts. (See Joel 2.)

However, Joel also offers God’s comfort for those ravaged years-- I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten …. (Joel 2:25). God’s reassuring promise offers comfort for me today. Yet, I wonder how God can reclaim the decades of my life lost to the futile efforts of repairing a narcissistic relationship. Those years are not like the damaged grass that resprouts after a Spring rain. Those days, months, and years are gone.

Centuries after Joel’s original prophecy, Jesus speaks reassuring words, …with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). I choose to accept Jesus’ words by faith. I also claim God’s promise to the Israelites to repay them for what feels like the ravaged years of my life. Accepting both truths gently opens my heart to see His current blessings and to anticipate His future ones.

Father, thank you for the stories in Your Word that reveal the ways You participate in the realities of life. Continually open my eyes to see You at work in my heart, in the dailiness of life, and in each challenge I face. May You be glorified in them. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
