Our Dependable God

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

…his compassions never fail.

Lamentations 3:22 NIV

My father transformed rugged acreage into a small working ranch. The five springs on

the property helped him envision the land’s potential.

Surprisingly, the spring at the old corral stopped flowing during a summer drought. I

watched as the cattle and horses sniffed the area before wandering off in search of

water elsewhere.

Just as those cattle sought a cool drink of water, I thirst for safe relationships. I yearn for

a predictable source of emotional presence and care. Expecting emotional presence

and care from a narcissistic relationship, though, is like going to a spring during a

summer drought.

The words of Lamentations remind me of God’s concern for my suffering. Because of

the LORD’S great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are

new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lam. 3:22, 23 NIV).

God’s compassionate care for me remains just as constant today as it was for the

Israelites. I choose to rest in God’s compassion knowing it flows from a dependable

wellspring that never runs dry.

Remind me, Lord, that you are the only consistent source of compassionate and

dependable care for my soul. Guide me in walking in the light of that truth as I wander

through life’s seasons of drought or seasons of plenty. Keep my heart and ears attuned

to faithfulness and compassionate mercy. Amen
