Hold my Hand

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.”

Mother confirmed my childhood memories of wanting someone to hold my hand. My older sister, one target of my hand-holding, complained about the responsibility as an adult.

I eagerly anticipated plenty of hand-holding in marriage. I discovered, instead, that my narcissistic spouse did not relish physical touch. He often pulled his hands from mine due to complaints of cramping or sweatiness. Most hand holding transpired when he failed to notice my stride did not match his. I trotted up, reached for his limp hand, and hung on to keep up.

I find sweet comfort in God’s words recorded in Isaiah 41:13. He proclaims to the nation of Israel, “I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.” I smile at my heavenly Father choosing hand-holding as an analogy for His comfort and provision.

The highs and lows in this healing journey from a narcissistic relationship often heighten my desire for someone to hold my hand, especially on the days when I feel I have lost my way. When that happens, I often gently clasp my own hands and envision the spiritual reality that God lovingly and securely holds them as He leads me along this path of life.

Father, thank you for including a hand holding analogy in Your Word that speaks so tenderly to both my little girl heart and my adult heart. I treasure the security I experience in Your presence, Your guidance, and Your gentle love. I pray in the name of Jesus, Your ultimate expression of love, amen.
