God’s Higher Ways

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:9

The words of my well-worn copy of Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost for His Highest, speak to me like an old friend.

“There is a connection between the strange providences of God and what we know of Him, and we have to learn to interpret the mysteries of life in the light of our knowledge of God. Unless we can look the darkest, blackest fact full in the face without damaging God’s character, we do not yet know Him.”

Based upon what I know is true about God, I realize my primary question for God, “Why did You let me marry a narcissist?” contradicts my belief in God’s sovereignty and His gift of free will.  

I want to rephrase my question based upon Isaiah’s words—that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than mine. My reframed question now is, “Lord, how will You redeem and be glorified in this season of broken plans and dreams?”

I acknowledge with thankfulness God’s gifts of a rewarding career and beautiful children because of my relationship with the narcissist. I thank Him for leading me into a new chapter of my life that includes a maturing faith plus a heart for knowing more of God’s higher thoughts and ways than my own.

Father, forgive me when I forget what I know to be true about You. Thank You for reminding me continually through Your Word and through Your servants who challenge me to grow and stand strong on truth. Prompt me when I forget that Your ways and thoughts are higher than mine. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
