A Hiding Place

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

You are my hiding place.

I know all too well the familiar feeling of an emotional trigger, yet I am still surprised when it happens. My response to a bullying text caught me off guard. Even though I was expecting a negative response, I felt protected by my new self-care skills and new boundaries.

The text triggered my nervous system that instantly moved into the “high alert” flight-or fight-mode. Days passed before I also identified an additional component, the fiery darts of spiritual warfare. I felt defeated and disappointed in my ability to navigate this confrontation with confidence.

King David’s words directed me to the place I sought—emotional safety in the Lord. David points to God as his hiding place.

You are my hiding place;

You will protect me from trouble

And surround me with songs of deliverance.

Psalm 32:7

Meditation on this promised provision, wise counsel, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, and peaceful background music helped bring me out of hypervigilance and back to the feeling of safety. I found my hiding place in God.

Father, I thank You for providing a safe place to regroup when navigating my way out of a trigger response to narcissistic bullying. Thank You that You are ever-present for reminding me of my options for self-care. Your grace for this journey is amazing, and I celebrate with thanksgiving and songs of deliverance for Your Son, Jesus, the true Deliverer, amen.
