…his compassions never fail.
Lamentations 3:22 NIV
My father transformed rugged acreage into a small working ranch. The five springs on the property helped him envision the land’s potential.
Surprisingly, the spring at the old corral stopped flowing during a summer drought. I watched as the cattle and horses sniffed the area before wandering off in search of water elsewhere. Severe drought made this spring undependable.
Just as cattle seek water, my soul seeks safe relationships. I yearn for a predictable source of emotional presence and care. Expecting emotional presence and care from narcissistic relationships, though, is like going to a spring during a drought.
We find in Lamentations a reminder of God’s concern for those who suffer. Because of the LORD’S great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lam. 3:22, 23 NIV). God’s compassions were available then as well as now, for those who seek them.
When earthly sources fail or disappoint, I have a dependable God whose wellspring of compassions never run dry. They are a renewable fountain of grace every day.
Remind me, Lord, that you are the only consistent source of compassionate and dependable care for my soul. Guide me in walking in the light of that truth as I wander through life’s seasons of drought or seasons of plenty. Keep my heart and ears attuned to faithfulness and compassionate mercy. Amen
