Hearing God’s Voice

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us…?

Luke 23:32

A friend and I searched for words to describe a stirring of God’s Holy Spirit in our hearts. We chose moved, touched, and felt His presence.

I then noticed a phrase in the biblical account of two disciples walking to a village after Jesus' crucifixion. The resurrected Jesus joined them and explained the Scriptures. Afterwards, as they reflected upon the experience, they exclaimed, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us?” (Luke 23:32).

After crying out for God’s guidance for my narcissistic relationship, I, too, felt a burning in my heart. I sensed Him saying, “Take care of yourself and leave him (the narcissist) to Me.”

Going to God for wisdom and guidance for healing from narcissistic abuse also reminded me that I was not alone. God heard. God cared. God answered.

God continues to communicate His Will for me as I face each new day. He often speaks through His Word. Sometimes, though, when I least expect it, He reassuringly whispers to my heart—and I recognize the warmth of His voice.

Father, thank You that we can know when You speak to our hearts. Keep us sensitive to all the ways You lead as well as when we must walk in faith during the silent times. Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to be with us every moment. Keep us alert to His promptings, whether subtle or burning, then empower us to respond with faith. In Your Son’s name I pray, amen.
