God’s Overarching Plan

As it turned out….
God sovereignly provided for Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth. (Read their story in Ruth 4:13-22). Reflecting upon God’s guidance and provision for these women helped me recognize God’s redemptive plan for my own life including the impact of narcissism.
The Lord guided and blessed each difficult decision Naomi made after the deaths of her husband and sons. She was not aware, however, that through her choices, God was bringing about His over-arching plan for fulfilling His covenant with Israel.
Naomi returned with Ruth from a neighboring country and settled in Bethlehem where she mentored Ruth in the Jewish culture and religion. Eventually, Naomi knew the joys of nurturing a grandson, Obed, Ruth and Boaz’s son. But Naomi could not know that this grandchild would become part of the lineage of King David and, ultimately, of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Viewing Naomi’s life from her limited perspective helps me accept God’s sovereignty over circumstances in my own life. It also reminds me that God is accomplishing much more than I can see today, or even in my lifetime. I pray that “doing the next thing” with faith in God’s overarching plan will have an eternal impact on His Kingdom and on the remaining chapters of my life’s story.
Father, Thank You for recording this story in Your Word, and for the way it points me to Your sovereign care for those who lived their lives in faith. You are at work even during the darkest days. I ask that You use my story as part of Your greater story of redemption. May You be glorified through it. In the name of Your Son, the promised Messiah, I pray, amen.
