God Meets Every Need

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Luke 4:18b-19

Jesus came to meet the deepest needs of humanity, the needs of the human soul. He defined His earthly ministry when He read from the scroll of Isaiah in his hometown synagogue. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:18-19).

However, as I read them, rather than seeing these words as the fulfillment of prophecy, I realized that they also applied to my current needs. I felt as if I stood among the people in Nazareth as Jesus proclaimed:

*Freedom for the prisoners (emotional, mental, and physical)

*Recovery of sight for the blind (physical, emotional, and spiritual sight)

*Release for the oppressed (physical, emotional, and spiritual oppression)

*God’s favor (a time for forgiveness, redemption, and mercy)

I, too, required freedom from the trauma bonding that developed within my narcissistic relationship. I needed to recover my sight, to clearly see patterns of abuse and toxicity. I needed to be released from the oppression of control and devaluation. I needed to experience God’s favor for incorporating these rescuing gifts.

Having heard, and having believed, I now accept these grace-filled mercies as my own.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to reveal the depths of Your love. Thank You for demonstrating that love in new ways in my life. May I continue to care for myself as You care for me. In Your Son’s name, Jesus, I pray, amen.
