Wrestling with God

Alice N

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

…Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

Genesis 32:24

My bible identifies Genesis 32:22-31 as “Jacob Wrestles with God.” Yet, God came to Jacob and initiated the nighttime wrestling match. Perhaps the heading could read:

“God Wrestles with Jacob”

I recall many restless nights and identify with Jacob’s struggle, fear. God came to him and Jacob resisted. I, too, have resisted.

I wrestled with anger, fear, rejection, confusion, and despair during turbulent nights. One evening, though, I wrestled with God.

I feared leaving the denial of a relationship crisis and the belief I could meet the narcissistic expectations. I resisted seeing truth. Since God is the source of all truth, in opposing truth, I wrestled with God.

God initiated that struggle knowing spiritual growth required truth. Just as Jacob asked God to bless Him, I, too, asked for God’s blessing. I joyfully report that just as God directed Jacob’s path, His has directed mine and provided blessings for each of my days.

Thank you, Father, for initiating the struggle and for not giving up until I saw what I needed to see. Thank You for on-going blessings and the wealth of healing graces available to me as Your child. Thank You for coming to me as my Shepherd, my Counselor, my Savior, and my wrestling Rescuer.
