Moral Courage

Healing from narcissistic abuse initially feels like hauling off boulders of emotional pain and heaving stones of despair over the fence. For believers, this focused work fits under the broader umbrella of becoming more like Christ, i.e. sanctification.

“…they trusted in Him.”

Daniel 3:28

The biblical story of the moral courage of three Jewish captives challenges me to evaluate my own moral courage as I chart a course through personal challenges. When these Jewish men refused to bow down to an idol of the king, they were thrown into a blazing furnace (Daniel 3:19-30). To the king’s amazement, he saw four men rather than three in the fire. Either the physical presence of Christ before His incarnation or an angel protected them during the horrifying experience*.

I, too, have faced what felt like fiery-furnace life events. The same protector for these Jewish captives walked with me and will remain by my side through the days ahead.

Fortunately, I did not fear physical retribution, though many survivors of narcissistic abuse do. Yet my journey of recovery from a toxic narcissistic relationship consistently requires its own type of moral courage as I choose my words, evaluate my actions, and intentionally live with integrity.

Experiences that cause my heart to swell with anxiety and grief still frighten me, but they no longer rule my life nor define me. Instead, I view these experiences as indicators of a need for additional self-awareness and self-care. I choose to grow through these moments rather than cower in fear because I know the Lord stands with me.

Father, may I sense You, Your Son, and Your angels walking with me, and may I exhibit moral courage because of my confidence in Your presence. May the resolution of these three Jewish men continue to challenge me to live with bold-hearted faith in God, my Savior and King, amen.
